CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Place of Refuge

My mouth tastes like dog hair and my head is pounding when the train arrives into Trivandrum. Between bouts of nausea, I panic, thinking for sure the police will be waiting for us. Instead, we disembark, greeted by clouds of mosquitoes.

Jared, who I haven't talked to for the entire train ride, hails a yellow rickshaw. As we sit crammed together in the rear bucket seat, my neck and face feel burning hot. All I can think about are the things I said to him—the things I didn't mean to say. The two-cylinder engine kicks into high gear, and we are off.

Jared keeps his eyes focused out the back of the rickshaw as we weave down the road.

I cough to get his attention, but he doesn't look at me. I want to crawl into a hole, and never come out. “Feeling paranoid?” I ask, finally breaking the self-imposed silence.

He bristles, still not looking at me. “The attack in Goa was too well-planned.”

Recalling the demon I saw before they attacked, my arm hairs rise up and a new wave of dizziness washes over me. Only afterward did I realize that the face in the mirror was the same one etched on Rava's temple in Mumbai. “How did he find us?”

Jared looks at me with annoyed eyes. “He was tracking us.”

I hear the implication in his voice, and I know he is partially right. It was my fault Rava found us. My jaw clenches, and I push back the urge to feel sick. “Do you think we lost him?”

“No one appears to be following us.” His expression loses a bit of its edge, as he probably realizes that I feel like roadkill. “Do you remember what Rava looked like?”

“A demon.”

“No, his human form.”

“Oh, no,” I say, only recalling what a drunken mess I was. Every time I swallow, it's like I'm attempting the cinnamon challenge. I'm definitely going to be sick.

He touches my elbow. “Here, drink some water, it will make you feel better,” Jared says, offering me his water bottle.

“Thanks.”

The little rickshaw burps and hiccups forward. We leave the city and go deep into rice paddy fields. Few vehicles travel the winding road, yet I can't help suspecting that someone is following us. Maybe it's Jared's fear wearing off on me.

After an hour, I'm feeling a little more human. “Who is Rava anyways?” I ask.

“Likely an Ascended god,” he says as if that's the end of the conversation.

“What was the deal with his temple in Mumbai?” I ask with chills running down my back. “I don't understand why anyone would want to pray to a demon like him.”

Jared frowns and avoids looking at me. “Fear, love, respect, tradition. There are hundreds of reasons why people believe in a god or a religion. Rava has likely lived over a hundred lives. After that much time, he's become a master at exploiting mankind.”

This is more than he's spoken in a day, and I don't want him to stop. “But why use
